Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands with a length of 72km and width of 35km, lying closer to Turkey than to the mainland of Greece. A mountain range runs along the central length of the island, with the highest peak at 1220m above sea level. The locals fondly refer to Rhodes as “The Rose of the Aegean” and the healthy climate and fertile soil allows for the beautiful scenery which awaits the visitor. There is an excellent tourist infrastructure which is no surprise considering Rhodes has the oldest tourist history of all of the Greek Islands and is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.
FBC PRASONISI – (Prasonisi Center) is situated on the most remote part of Rhodes at the very southern tip, 90km from Rhodes Town and 40km from Lindos. This area is a well known windsurfers paradise on the island, not only because it has both a wave spot and a flat water spot in one place, but also because the winds are the strongest of the whole island here. During summer time, and when water levels are low enough, Prasonisi is a pensinsula attached to Rhodes. During the winter time, when water levels are high enough, Prasonisi becomes an island. There is a purpose-built settlement on Prasonisi that contains accommodation, convenience stores, and restaurants. The closest village is Katavia, and the airport is one and a half hours transfer time.
Rhodes is at a crossroads between Europe, The Middle East and Africa and this has given the island many different identities, cultures and architectures over its’ long history. It is a big island with so much to do and see, and it really has something for everyone. The best way to see the island is by car in order to cover the key sights and attractions. There is a mass of history here and museums, exhibitions, historical tours and excursions are readily available. If relaxing is your preferred sport then you wont be disappointed by all the sandy beaches to be found. We recommend a drive along the western side of the island where tourism has not yet arrived and the scenery is rugged and natural. Party people will not be disappointed and can head for the party capital of Faliraki to dance the night away.
All over the island there are points of interest, perfect scenery and an abundance of things to do. You certainly won’t get bored. In fact – the spot is so wonderful here you will probably spend all of your time on the water and will need to come back just to see some of the sights!
WE RECOMMEND:
Petaloudes (Butterfly Valley) – where millions of butterflies hang out together from mid June to September
Lindos – the village that launched a thousand postcards. Sandy beaches and mosaic streets
Mandraki Harbour – Ancient Harbour and main entry point for the Island for nearly 2,500 years
Acropolis of Rhodes – Built on the highest part of the City overlooking the Old and New Towns of Rhodes
Bay of Faliraki – Sandy beaches, vibrant night life and plenty of water sports
